We wanted to hear from you, dear reader! We're starting up a weekly article regarding questions our community might ask us. This topic came from the lovely Alexa, the front desk extraordinaire at Lawa Meraki!
Q: Why can't I use foods on my face to DIY skincare?
A: As appealing as it is to be able to turn to your pantry and whip up your own skin solutions, it's not great. Too many clients turn to Pinterest recipes to try to lighten dark spots, fight acne, and plump out fine lines and wrinkles. These recipes are, truthfully, a shortcut to disaster. They can be using too abrasive ingredients, leading to micro tears in your skin that glow bacteria to enter and flourish. They can call for ingredients that may contain harmful bacteria (eggs seems to be the biggest culprit). They can say using too acidic or basic ingredients is good for your skin, when in reality it can cause irritation, dryness, and even a chemical burn. bottom line- homemade skincare can end with less than desirable results, and its better to be safe and purchase lab formulated, FDA approved products.
